Death and Facebook. 06/25/2009
A few months ago, an acquaintance of mine died. His death was immediately preceded by a short hospitalization - he lost consciousness fairly quickly after admitting himself to the hospital for his illness. His final weeks contained quite a narrative: the health crisis, the coma, the changing levels of organ and brain function, the determination that death was inevitable, the final visits, and, finally, his passing. amy, your essay is the first serious and thoughtful thing i have read about facebook. and i think you are right on.. it gives me something to consider about a method of communication i usually just joke about.

Beautifully said. I have not mastered facebook nor my own inhibitions on it, but when we became "friends" and I was able to see recent pictures of the family and read about things you were doing, it was a nice connection, a broader context of your life. Also, as you said, one of the things it provides is another dimension of communication and participation, albeit silent, but, by no means unimportant nor unmeaningful.

you summed it up perfectly. its as if you watched me during those days connecting in some way with this event that was affecting so many around me.
